Selamat Hari Kemerdekaan Indonesia! On 17 August 2026, Indonesia celebrates its 81st Independence Day. Hari Kemerdekaan Indonesia 2026 is a meaningful occasion for Indonesians around the world to celebrate the country’s history, culture, diversity and the spirit of togetherness that continues to bring people closer. At Indotutors, this day has a special meaning for us because our work is centred around something that connects people every day: Bahasa Indonesia.
A Day to Celebrate Indonesia
Indonesia proclaimed its independence on 17 August 1945. Since then, 17 August has become a day of celebration across the country, with communities coming together for flag ceremonies, traditional games, neighbourhood activities and other celebrations.
But beyond the festivities, Independence Day is also a time to reflect on what makes Indonesia special. Indonesia is home to hundreds of ethnic groups, cultures, traditions and regional languages. Despite this diversity, Bahasa Indonesia plays an important role in bringing people together. It is the national and official language of Indonesia and serves as a means of communication across different regions and communities.
The Connection Between Language and Culture
When you learn a language, you are learning more than vocabulary and grammar. You begin to understand how people communicate, how they express respect and familiarity, how traditions are shared, and how culture influences everyday conversations. This is one of the reasons we believe learning Bahasa Indonesia can be such a rewarding experience. Bahasa Indonesia itself has a strong connection to Indonesia’s history and identity. It was recognised as the language of unity during the Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda) in 1928 and later became the state language under the 1945 Constitution.
A simple phrase such as apa kabar?, terima kasih or sampai jumpa is more than a collection of words. As you learn to use Indonesian naturally, you also begin to understand the people and culture behind the language.
Learning Bahasa Indonesia Beyond Words
For many people, learning Bahasa Indonesia starts with a simple reason. They may want to speak with Indonesian colleagues, communicate with friends or family, travel more comfortably, or feel more confident when working with Indonesian business partners. But learning a language is not only about memorising vocabulary and grammar. As you learn Bahasa Indonesia, you also start to notice how people communicate in different situations. You learn when to use more formal or informal expressions, how to show respect, and how the way we speak can change depending on who we are talking to. These are small things, but they can make everyday communication feel much more natural.
At Indotutors, this is an important part of how we approach language learning. We want our learners to be able to use Bahasa Indonesia in real conversations, not simply know the words in a textbook. Understanding a little more about Indonesian culture can also help learners communicate with greater confidence and avoid misunderstandings. For us, learning Bahasa Indonesia is about connecting with people. And that is something we are especially happy to celebrate on Indonesia’s Independence Day.
Celebrating Indonesia Through Bahasa Indonesia
For us at Indotutors, teaching Bahasa Indonesia is not simply about helping someone speak another language. It is about helping learners communicate with Indonesian colleagues, friends, family and business partners with greater confidence and understanding. Many of our learners first come to us because they want to communicate better. Over time, learning the language often gives them a deeper appreciation of Indonesian culture as well. That connection between language and people is something worth celebrating on Independence Day.
Selamat Hari Kemerdekaan Indonesia
As Indonesia celebrates its 81st Independence Day, we would like to wish all Indonesians, Indonesian families and friends of Indonesia a very happy and meaningful Hari Kemerdekaan Indonesia. May the spirit of unity, diversity and togetherness continue to bring people closer — in Indonesia and around the world.
Dirgahayu Republik Indonesia ke-81!
Selamat Hari Kemerdekaan Indonesia.
Merdeka! ❤️🤍
